The following advice comes from from the May/June 2010 issue of Layers Magazine, and was written by brand identity designer Andrew Sabatier.
How to convince your clients they need a brand and not just a logo
“Explain that you should be employed to find a brand idea that will form the basis of all the company’s branding (and perhaps even future business decisions) of which a logo should only be one expression, an idea that is likely to form the basis of a the brand’s overall approach. Such an idea may already be a defining characteristic of the business waiting to be celebrated in the branding.
Point out other brands your client admires that can be identified by branding elements that are not the logo. Some well-branded businesses can be identified by their color, typeface, photographic, illustration, or even copywriting style alone, or (more commonly) a carefully selected combination of these elements. Try to point out the underlying idea that determines all these other brand elements.
Your client’s success is your success. Sell a process to your client; a process you’ll guide them through and that will enable you to decide on a brand identity solution together. This will help you to establish a long-term relationship with your client. If you deliver good ideas they will be more likely to consult you again to develop the brand ideas even further.
Avoid references to the word “logo,” rather talk about the marks of a brand of which there should be a primary “brand mark” (two words). Replace “logo” with “brandmark” (one word). This will help you and your client to think about the overall experience of the brand and not just the logo in isolation. Logos are only meaningful in context and they should be seen to add value to that context. It is unlikely that a logo alone will be able to add sufficient value to a business. Logos are best employed in a system of brand marks that determine a unique brand experience.
Avoid logo beauty parades. Don’t only show different logos; logos are usually abstract expressions of an idea. Show how the logo idea relates to other brand expressions of the same idea. Show how an idea works in other situations, not just on stationary. The better the idea, the more unique, adaptable, and valuable it will be, and the higher the fees you can justifiably charge. Dedicated logo designers are a dime a dozen whereas brand identity designers offer far more value and often dramatically improve business for their clients.”

Wine Bottles Advertising Project
For my final photography 2 project I chose photographing bottles. The theme I tried to develop was a luxury ad for different wine bottles. I stuck with this topic and each week continuously tried to improve it. The reason I chose this topic was because of my previous experience with shooting bottles for the past project and I wanted to take it a step further. Throughout my shoots I would experiment with different types of wine and cognac bottles, and use different locations and lighting. (more...)

On my first photo shoot I chose to photograph my friend. I chose to photograph her because she portrays her love for fashion. Her eyelashes were done and she wore a bow and her nose ring. We were doing the photo shoot at her dorm in the Fashion Institute of Technology. I chose her dorm because there was a big window which allows a lot of sunlight to come through. This photo shoot took place in the afternoon so there would be a good amount of sunlight since I know lighting will affect the outcome of my photo. The light I used was Directional light. I had my camera set to Automatic ISO therefore I didn’t have to adjust the ISO. The lighting that came through the window was side lighting because the window was to the right of my friend being photographed. The photo shoot went well but I didn’t know that we had to take multiple shots of each pose, since it was my first photo shoot so I tried capturing different poses throughout the photo shoot. Also the subject moved a lot and wasn’t always comfortable being photographed because she felt her appearance wasn’t right.
The next photo shoot took place in my kitchen. I chose wine bottles and flowers because I felt they would make a very nice composition and I really liked the shadow, the bottles made on the table. Also the usual setting for wine bottles is in the kitchen. Since during my still life shooting, I moved a lot the lighting was all over. Sometimes the light came from the side and some shots the light came from the back. This shooting took place in the morning because there was a lot of light and in order to produce beautiful shoots the proper lighting was needed. Throughout the photo shoot I used Automatic ISO just like in the last photo shoot. This photo shoot would be much better if I wouldn’t have changed position every shot. It would be better if I would move after I would capture good shots.
I think my photo shoots would improve if I would work more on each pose. Also Automatic ISO isn’t always the best solution; next time I will definitely set the ISO’s to make the amount of light more precise. I think in both of my photo shoots I had a good amount of light to work with. Also as I’m learning more about my Camera I am able to control it more and more. I am now able to modify more setting to make the photo shoots right. Setting such as the white balance to make the color right. That was my experience with my first photo shoots.
